All the Libraries Julie : April 22, 2014 5:38 pm : News

All the Libraries
A unique directory conceived and produced by Ruth Beale and Simon Elvins, inviting creative responses to London libraries. See mine on Stoke Newington Library here.

In Stoke Newington library foyer hangs a plaque commemorating ‘the American romancer, poet and critic’ Edgar Allen Poe and his attendance at the Manor School that previously stood on this site. Poe’s short story ‘William Wilson’ that explores the theme of ‘the doppelgänger’ also fictionalised his childhood experiences here. Extracts have been edited together to create a description of the library that transposes the past and the present, the real and the imagined.

A Rake’s Progress – Dimensions Variable, Miami Julie : September 13, 2012 10:44 am : News

Dimensions Variable is pleased to present A Rake’s Progress, a project by London based artist Julie Hill. The exhibition will run from September 7 through October 20, 2012. This project will take place in our new Downtown location at 100 NE 11th Street, Miami FL 33132.

A trail of opened letters spills across the floor indicating their recipient’s sudden departure, hurried in a state of fear or panic. The debris left in his wake tells the story of a

man’s demise through the reckless allocation of credit and the savagery of debt. Amongst the ruins, plastic and scattered ephemera glints madly with the illusion of capital.

A Rake’s Progress
is a contemporary adaptation of William Hogarth’s 18th century satirical work of the same name, retold in light of the recent financial crisis.
